Several residents of Northern Virginia report they received an automated call last night that critcizes the Democratic Party and Sen. Barack Obama for wasteful spending. The Associated Builders and Contractors' Free Enterprise Alliance is making automated calls to North Carolina voters noting that the Salisbury Republican voted to allow offshore drilling. - North Carolina (10/8): Former Gov. Jim Hunt is robocalling voters too. An automated call featuring a recording of the four-term governor encourages voters to cast their ballot for a straight Democratic Party ticket. - Montana (10/9): Voters around the state received what may be the first of the fall election season's illegal robo-calls Wednesday afternoon from the Montana Democratic Party. The call was in support of Democratic Superintendent of Public Instruction candidate Denise Juneau. Two members of the Tribune staff received the automated call on their cell phones from an "877" number. When they answered, Juneau's recorded voice urged them to vote in the Nov. 4 election. - California (10/13): San Fransisco Chronicle article. Supervisor Chris Daly, who has been elected by his constituents three times but is viewed as perhaps the least popular politician citywide. The San Francisco Association of Realtors is paying for robocalls in districts One, Three and 11, comparing some of the candidates to Daly. Supervisor Chris Daly. In District Three, voters have received a call from "Sue" from the "San Francisco Homeowners Council" (a group that is an arm of the association).

The calls are targeted at Catholic voters and in some cases have caused confusion over whether the attacks are backed by the Catholic Church. - NJ (10/23): "As the Third District House race enters its final days, the campaigns of Democrat John Adler and Republican Chris Myers are launching harsh ads and burning up residents' phone lines with automated calls. Freedom's Watch, a conservative political organization, got in the race in the summer, using automated calls to blame Adler for high gasoline prices. Recently, the group paid for robo-calls saying that because Adler supported a program to give health insurance to the children of working-poor families, he also favored giving free health insurance to illegal immigrants.
