While New Jersey already has a law that effectively bans robo calls, local politicians have routinely ignored the law because of one critical sentence in the law: "a prior or current relationship".
Good luck with that.
Specifically: Full story here.
While the law bars random automated calls, it exempts messages in which "a prior or current relationship" between caller and listener has been established. Some political campaigns interpret the phrase to mean any registered voter.
Therefore, the proposal is to eliminate the phrase "prior relationship," which would end robocalls to Democrats and Republicans simply because they are registered members of a political party.
The bill also would allow New Jerseyans who sign up for the no-telemarketing calls list to seek legal recourse if they receive a robocall.
Sen. Jeff Van Drew and Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matt Milam said they would renew their push for legislation to keep New Jerseyans from being harassed by unwanted electioneering calls.
The proposal, S-423 in the Senate and A-2325 in the Assembly, has been introduced in both houses and referred to committees. A similar measure last session failed to advance.
